South Island Overview

Posted by Website Admin on July 23, 2024

As we flew into Nelson, stunning coastal vistas and lush, rolling hills greeted us, setting the scene for our South Island familiarisation trip. This vibrant city buzzes with an artsy vibe, marrying its natural beauty with a rich cultural tapestry that lures travellers from all over the World.

Upon landing, our adventure started with our guide, Zane. From Paddy's Knob we had panoramic views over Nelson before a stroll through Queens Gardens and visits to local galleries like The Suter Art Gallery, where we immersed ourselves in the local arts scene.

Our first night’s stay was at Te Koi, where hosts Ali and Ian became our guides to the best local experiences. They recommended a trip to Mapua Wharf, where we hired bikes and explored eclectic  art studios and crafts. A highlight was Rare Creations, an interactive wooden art gallery that   captivated our creative spirits.

Culinary delights awaited at Babagato and Brick Eatery at Monaco Resort, where Ali and Ian's   personal connections promised memorable dining experiences. The Italian flavours at Babagato and  the cozy ambiance at Brick Eatery were just what we needed after a day of exploring.

Next stop on our itinerary was the luxurious Pihopa Retreat, where we were pampered in spacious   suites and treated to unique experiences like pre-dinner drinks in the poolhouse. The wonderful   Sarah, owner of Pihopa, ensured our stay was seamless with thoughtful touches like a taxi charge   card for evening outings.

Our journey continued with a fun trip out onto the water and a cruise around Split Apple Rock with Rod and Karina from Abel Tasman Charters. Back in the air, we found ourselves spoiled with a magical helicopter ride with South Pacific Helicopters.

Dan, our pilot, took us on a sensory journey that included gin tasting beside a  mountain lake – it was hard to believe this was part of the job! Whale watching and a visit to Middlehurst Station provided a blend of wildlife encounters and authentic farm experiences before being flown back at Hapuku Kitchen, where Chris and Fiona offered a farm-to-table experience that was both grounding and delicious.

In Christchurch, we indulged in the comforts of The George and the modern elegance of The Mayfair Hotel. A stroll to Riverside Market added a local flavour to our urban explorations before heading to Lake Pukaki. There we stayed at Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat, a stay that was nothing short of magical. Nestled in the Ashley Mackenzie Lakeside Villa, a massive two-bedroom haven, I woke up to of the lake each morning, a view so perfect it almost seems unreal. One of the highlights of the stay was the evening stargazing event, an intimate encounter led by an astronomer. This experience, along with a private dinner, reminded me of the magic that bespoke travel experiences can give us all.

Adding to the adventure of our trip, I embarked on my first heli-hike to the Tasman Glacier, an exhilarating journey across dramatic landscapes that are as majestic as they are remote. The sleek black helicopter added a touch of sophistication to the rugged terrain of the glacier.

From Mt Cook we headed to Lake Hawea Station where we stayed in the spacious Packhorse Cottage. A farm tour gave us an authentic rural experience, from sheep shearing to exclusive hilltop star-gazing and dining, making it a must-visit  destination for travellers looking for a true kiwi farming adventure.

Each accommodation along our journey, from the self-sufficient elegance at Lake Hawea Station's Packhorse Cottage to the understated luxury of Fiordland Lodge, was carefully chosen, offering a blend of local charm and high-end comfort. Whether it was the amazing service at Fiordland Lodge, or the beauty of Lake Hawea Station, each stay was a testament to the diverse accommodations New Zealand offers.

Navigating through these experiences, my role goes beyond mere bookings; it's about crafting stories and adventures that resonate with the traveller. Each location, from the remote corners of Milford Sound to the bustling energy of Queenstown's The Spire, was a chapter in our South Island tour of luxurious stays, exhilarating adventures, and  moments of tranquil beauty, each carefully woven into an unforgettable journey that celebrated New Zealand’s stunning landscapes and warm hospitality. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!
